Dentist Plano Don't be Fooled by DIY Whitening Kits

McKinney Dentist Discusses Why Professional Teeth Whitening is Beneficial for Your Smile

Having a brighter smile is a characteristic that more and more patients want to achieve every day. Seeing the shining smile of a celebrity on television can provide patients enough of a push to work on their own smile. A common treatment that patients have been using to brighten their smile is DIY teeth whitening kits, usually bought at their local store. Whether it’s strips or trays, these kits are easily accessible and cheaper than going to your McKinney dentist—but does that make it the better option?

While these kits are certainly convenient, there are negative attributes related to them, as well. Patients expose themselves to several risks and dangers when using these products that they may not be aware of. Blinded by the comparison of prices, patients believe that they’re saving time and money by using these products because they can use them whenever it’s convenient for them, whether they’re on the go or at home, and they don’t have to go out of their way to make an appointment and spend extra money on the procedure.

These DIY kits have the ability to brighten your smile, but that doesn’t always mean that they will. There can be heavy consequences and empty promises when it comes to these packages:

· Erode the surface of your teeth: Not all of the ingredients in these strips and trays are regulated. While there are enough bleaching ingredients to change the color of the surface of your teeth, it doesn’t mean that it’s a safe amount of the ingredient. The surface of your teeth, your enamel, is much more sensitive than you think and can easily be damaged with a harsh amount of a bleaching product.

· Damaging your gums: When you’re getting your teeth whitened at the dentist, they go out of their way to cover and protect your gums so the ingredients are only focused on your teeth. Since many of these kits have strips that can overlap onto your gums or trays that only have one size, your gums are in danger of being attacked by ingredients that they aren’t meant to come in contact with.

· Not whitening your smile enough, or long enough: The reason that these kits sell so well is because they’re cheaper than getting this procedure done professionally, but if you continue to buy them over an extended amount of time because your smile isn’t as bright as you want it to be, you may end up spending the same amount of money you would have if you scheduled an appointment. In comparison, patients would rather spend less amount of money if they’re able to get immediate satisfaction as opposed to spending more and going out of their way to whiten their teeth.
